Biography for Andrew Lennon
I am a consulting engineer and scientist with a wide range of interests. My professional interests are mainly in the area of structural mechanics, computational mechanics, and analysis. My professional experience covers civil engineering, offshore engineering, aerospace, and I have recently moved to into work for ocean renewable energy.
I obtained my first degree in civil engineering from University College Cork in Ireland. During this time I worked for two summers as a student engineer in civil engineering, gaining valuable experience about practical engineering. I graduated with first class honours and at the top of my class. After graduation, I moved across the Irish sea to the UK for postgraduate study. I read for an MSc in computational modelling and analysis at the numerical methods centre in Swansea founded by Prof Zienkiewicz. I obtained a distinction in the MSc and he subsequently spent a few months doing research at the Department of Aeronautics in Imperial College in London.
A number of years in the offshore industry followed my period at Imperial, before I returned to academia and research. I moved across the Irish sea again to read for postgraduate degrees in engineering (structural mechanics) at Cambridge University. I graduated with an MPhil and a PhD at Cambridge University for my work on the structural mechanics of inflatable/tension structures. Specifically, I worked on the stability of membrane structures with an emphasis on structures in tension.
Leaving Cambridge, it was back to industry and another few years doing analysis and structural mechanics in the offshore sector. I moved back to Ireland again at the end of 2004 and I started my own practice ABL Engineering in January 2005. My work is a mix of small projects and larger contracts, with a large amount of my time spent on continuing professional development and a portion of research and development. The small projects typically take a few weeks and I usually perform this work from my own office. The larger projects can take six to nine months and typically I base myself in the client's offices.
